Customize message and file retention
By default, Slack will retain all messages and files (including sound and video clips) for the lifetime of your workspace. If you'd like, you tin can suit your retentivity settings to automatically delete messages and files after a ready amount of time. You can also allow members to edit the message retentiveness settings for private channels and direct letters (DMs).
What you demand to know
- Bulletin and file deletion is permanent. Suit these settings with care.

Gear up org-level message retentiveness policies
As an Org Owner, you can set up a policy for message retentiveness that will apply to every workspace in your org. With a policy in place, Workspace Owners won't take the selection to adjust message retention settings for workspaces they manage.
To set an org policy for message retention, contact our Support squad. When a policy is ready, Slackbot will notify the Primary Org Owner and request approval to apply it. If canonical, Slackbot will notify each Workspace Possessor of changes to retention settings.
Review org-level message retention policies
- From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
- Select Settings & administrationfrom the bill of fare, then clickOrganization settings.
- Click Settings in the left sidebar, then select Messages and files.
- Review your policies below Message Retention Policies .
Set workspace-level bulletin retentivity settings
Annotation: If a retention policy has been ready at the org level, Workspace Owners won't be able to adjust message retention settings for their workspace(due south).
- From your desktop, click your workspace proper name in the top left.
- Select Settings & administrationfrom the menu, then clickWorkspace settings.

- Fellow member overrides allow members on all plans to set their own message retention period for private channels and their DM conversations.

- Next to Bulletin Retentivity & Deletion, click Expand.
- Under Message retention overrides, select your preference.
- Click Save.
- Check the box side by side to Yes, apply these new settings, so click Confirm Settings.
Set message retention override policies
Equally an Org Owner, yous can set a policy to allow admins or members to override retentiveness settings and adjust message retention for individual conversations in every workspace of your Enterprise Grid org. With this policy in identify, Workspace Owners won't have the option to adjust message retentiveness settings for workspaces they manage.
Contact our Back up team to set this policy for your org. When a policy is prepare, Slackbot will notify the Org Primary Owner with a request to apply it. If approved, Slackbot will notify each Workspace Possessor of changes to retention settings.

- Select Settings & administrationfrom the bill of fare, so clickOrganization settings.

Note: If a retention policy has been ready at the org level, Workspace Owners won't be able to adjust bulletin retentivity settings for their workspace(s).

- Check the box next to Let workspace members override these settings.
- Click Save.
- Check the box next to Yes, apply these new settings, then click Confirm Settings.
Accommodate file retention settings
When configuring your file retention settings, there are 4 options to cull from:
- Keep all files
Slack will keep all shared files for the lifetime of your workspace. - Keep all files, only for a set up number of days
Slack volition permanently delete files ( snippets , posts , uploaded files, and those shared via third-party apps similar Dropbox or Google Drive) later on the number of days you choose. - Go along all files, including deleted files
Slack will keep all files for the lifetime of your workspace. Deleted files will be available via exports for all conversations and the Discovery API. - Keep all files, including deleted files, for a set up number of days
Slack will permanently delete files ( snippets , posts , uploaded files , and those shared via 3rd-party apps) after the number of days you choose. Deleted files will be available via exports for all conversations and the Discovery API .
Annotation: Files shared via 3rd-party apps remain stored in the service they originate from. Deleting them from Slack won't touch the original files.
